Countertops: common questions
What is the difference between granite and quartz countertops?
Granite is 100% natural stone — every slab is unique and it is very heat-resistant, but it is porous and needs periodic sealing. Quartz is engineered from ground stone and resin — it is non-porous, never needs sealing, resists stains well, and offers more consistent color, though it is less heat-tolerant than granite.
Which countertop material is the most durable?
Quartzite and granite are the hardest, most scratch- and heat-resistant natural options. Engineered quartz is extremely durable and the easiest to maintain. Marble is the softest of the common premium materials and is more prone to scratching and to etching from acids.
Do quartz countertops need to be sealed?
No. Quartz is non-porous, so it never needs sealing. Natural stones such as granite, marble, and quartzite are porous and should be sealed at installation and resealed periodically — typically every one to three years, depending on the stone and how heavily it is used.
How much do new countertops cost?
Installed countertops generally run about $40–$100+ per square foot depending on the material, edge profile, and slab grade. Quartz and mid-grade granite sit in the middle; exotic quartzite and premium marble are at the top. Most kitchens need roughly 40–60 square feet.
